In the thought of the philosopher Plotinus, the universe was created through a process of emanation that starts from the divine light of the ‘One’ and culminates in matter. This model of thought implies a hierarchy of being, in which the higher realities are closer to the divine principle, while the lower ones, such as matter, are more distant and imperfect. Matter itself, although a reality, is considered an emanation that reflects the distance from the original unity and the ideal. Plotinus’ philosophy thus represents an attempt to explain the complexity of the world through a single divine origin and a continuous process of manifestation and return to unity.
